I know that we are intending to use Yahoo as the platform for this league. If I recall from last season, 2-way players actually had to occupy TWO different roster spots (one pitching, one batting) on that website.
I assume the people selecting these players (Ohtani, McKay, Lorenzen) are assuming they've selected the whole player and both pitching and batting. Does this mean that those teams can only select 24 other players? I don't think Yahoo will let you score for a week if you have an illegal roster, so those teams cannot simply carry 27 players to make up the difference...

In some leagues, we allow the owners to declare which version of the player they want to use on a given scoring week.

That's one way to do it, certainly.
But aren't we using daily scoring? Shouldn't you be able to play Ohtani at UTIL 5 times and SP 1 time in a given week? That's gotta be what TB thought when they took him in the third (first) round...
Not trying to be contrarian here, I'm just trying to make sure we work this out before we get too far down the road.
For instance--if I trade for a 2-way player, do I need to cut 2 players to make room for them?

already asked at the beginning of the draft and rook says we acquire one player with both stats. im pretty sure that the hitting on days where he pitches if maddon does that will not count just like a NL pitcher.

With Yahoo though, the owner would have to continously add and drop the different versions of the player... obviously, this shouldn't count as a buyout.

It's not even that simple. Not sure the level to which Commish can modify the league settings, but Yahoo also defaults the player to a 48 hour wavier period when dropped. Commish would need to disable this (if you can...? Yahoo's customization isn't extensive)....otherwise, you'd lose a day of the hitter.
Of course, Commish could always go override the waiver period and make the change for you (I believe)...but then you have to worry about telling him to do that and having it processed in time and etc....seems cumbersome.

Ohtani for example DH and SP versions count as one player, one roster spot. On days he hits, his pitching goes dark. When he pitches his hitting goes dark. Dark means not active. He counts as one player, one roster spot and one payroll.

I’m not arguing how we have structured our rules or scoring-I’m perfectly cool with that. I’m raising a technical problem we have with Yahoo as the fantasy platform. Yahoo treats 2-way players as two entities. For example, Ohtani is 2 separate players on their website, Ohtani(P) and Ohtani(UTL). This is different from sites like Fantrax and others where he’s Ohtani(P, UTL)—one player with two positions.
So for an owner to have both the pitching and batting versions of their player available to them, it’s going to take two roster spots on the website (even tho we only count him as one player and one contract). Which means you either need to add/drop every time you want to switch between batting and pitching, or you have to choose to not carry one of your other 25 players on your Yahoo roster. Yahoo won’t score illegal rosters, so you can’t just have those teams have 27 players (with two of them being the same physical player).
The add/drop method would work fine, I imagine. It’ll be incumbent on the managers to make sure the put the right version on their team each day. The only problem is that typically Yahoo will not let you reclaim a player you dropped for 48 hours after you release them. So either we need to turn this feature off on the Yahoo site (not sure you can...?), or the Commish will have to process the change for you. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use your 2-way player as a batter the day after they pitch.

I just did an Ohtani search in the other Yahoo league that I am in and yes, David you are right. Two roster spots. He will be treated as one payroll. The manager who own Ohtani won’t be taking his 26th round pick

It seems unfair to force owners to have 2 roster spots for 1 player. What about Brendan McKay?
I like the idea of the commish adjusting the Yahoo settings to no waiver period and letting the owner drop and add each Ohtani or McKay or any future 2-way players as needed. There shouldn't be the need for a waiver period on our Yahoo settings since you must bid on all players on this site prior to adding on Yahoo

These two way players cause problems for some leagues. I don’t know if this helps, but we are going with 26 man rosters, instead of the normal 25 man MLB roster. Beginning this year MLB changed the rule to go from 25 to 26 man rosters.
There is a no waiver period to allow a manager to drop a traded player immediately and the other team to add him immediately to his roster. We won’t be using the Yahoo trade feature of completing the trade using their settings. All trades are done on Proboards. All messaging is done on Proboards. We use Yahoo for scoring, daily roster changes, adding and subtracting players from our rosters.
Its looks like Ohtani and other two way players will have to count as two roster spots, but one payroll. When trading or dropping a two way player, both roster spots, meaning the hitting player and the pitching player must be traded or dropped together.

Guess I should’ve asked these questions before drafting Ohtani and keeping McKay.

If we can disable the waivers time window, it wont be a problem. You'll just have to add/drop them daily based on how you want to use them. So its annoying for you, but it's not going to prevent you from optimizing their use.
If we cannot...then yeah, less than ideal.

I don't think he should have to lose a roster spot... just do no waivers and it will cover it.
